An Open Letter to Receptionists

Dear Receptionists,

You hold some incredible power. And I’m not talking about your ability to schedule appointments (though I’m sure you’re a boss at that too). But really:

Your smile, before a tough appointment, is almost as good as a hug.

Your cheerful kindness, when we know that what lies ahead may be unpleasant, painful, or devastating, is deeply needed.

Your sheer humanity in the face of the unknown, while the second hand creeps around the clock and we wait, our insides a writhing coil, is a lifeline to many of us.

I found this tree blooming in the middle of autumn. It kind of weirded me out.

But anyway, it’s for you. I brought you flowers. Even if they’re out of season.

You may think you don’t matter because you aren’t doing the heavy lifting of diagnosis and treatment and care, but what you’re capable of simply by looking us in the eye, treating us with kindness, and reminding us that we are not alone goes a long way to helping us through those tough days.

I thought you might not hear that very often.

Thank you—for showing up and doing your job with compassion.

Yours with plenty of nervous waiting room experience,

Marian
